Can Google Topple Facebook with “Google Me”?

How Google Plans to Conquer the World, One Product at a Time

A little less than two weeks ago, the mass of internet junkies gasped, shuddered and rolled their eyes at rumors based on a single tweet by social news site Digg’s founder Kevin Rose. Allegedly, and from a “very credible source”, his tweet tells us that Google is to launch a “Facebook competitor” dubbed “Google Me”.

As I am a curious person, I instantly began my pursuit to uncover the phenomenon of this one, tiny sentence. After searching on various blog posts and “Digging” through Rose’s Twitter account, there seemed to be no sign of this tweet anymore. Interestingly enough, after this rumor was released, Google quickly contacted Rose and asked him to remove the tweet from his page. Now why would they do that if it’s just some everyday Google gossip?

Supposedly, if they actually end up launching it, Google Me will be the end all and be all of Social Media. However, will users actually utilize it? Or will it be another Social Media Flop like Google Buzz or Google Wave?  Over 400 million Facebook users have impregnated their profiles with years of pictures, wall posts, videos and games. They have spent time and effort to make their profile what it is today, and unless Google has some magical button they can click that will transport all of their information over to Google’s site (which, granted, is quite possible), it is unlikely that users will hop aboard this train.

Or will they?  Please share your thought (and rumors) on Google Me.  What have you heard about this as-of-now mysterious product?
